Holidays to Finland

Scandinavia is having a serious moment in the limelight at the moment, and one of our favourite Scandi destinations has to be beautiful Finland. Perhaps less well-known than Norway and Denmark, Finland boasts a stunning array of natural beauty from the snowy mountainous northern areas (where you’ll find a certain jolly Christmas gentleman hiding up in Lapland), to the thick forests and mighty lakes of the southern lowlands. With vast sand dunes along its coastline and colourful cities, such as Helsinki, to explore, Finland is a place where you’re sure to find adventures, come summer or winter.

The outdoor lovers among you will be spoilt for choice on their holiday to Finland, whether you visit during the snowy winter months or the long summer days, where the sun barely sets. The Land of the Midnight Sun is made for outdoor sports. In winter, you can enjoy miles upon miles of cross-country skiing trails, skating on frozen lakes, snowmobiling, and alpine sports such as skiing, snowboarding and even snow-kiting! During the warmer summer months, Finland’s mountains and forests are a wonderful place to hike, bike and camp in, while the great lakes and beaches are home to sports such as canoeing, sailing and fishing.

Top Attractions for Finland Holidays

Finland’s capital city, Helsinki, sits on the shores of the Baltic Sea and is a thriving, cosmopolitan place. Awarded the World Design Capital in 2012, Helsinki is a cool mix of cutting-edge design, grand historical buildings and a lucky location where nature is always close at hand. It’s a city packed with culture so take the time to visit some of the best attractions, from museums to fortresses. Visit Suomenlinna, an imposing 18th century sea fortress on the edge of the city, marvel at the unique Rock Church, or soak up some Finnish culture at Seurasaari, a lovely open air museum. Art lovers can immerse themselves in the world of traditional Finnish art at the Ateneum gallery, or go contemporary at the strikingly modern Kiasma gallery. You’ll also find a host of vibrant eateries serving everything from traditional hearty Finnish cuisine, to the uber trendy international gastronomy. In the dark winter months, there’s nothing better than cosying up in one of Helsinki’s bars with a glass of lakka, a warming liqueur made form Finnish wild cloudberries.

Of course, a popular natural attraction in Finland is the spectacular Northern Lights. Head north to Lapland between September and March for the best chance of witnessing this amazing sight, where lights dance across the night skies. And around Christmastime, you’ll discover a magical world of Father Christmas waiting to captivate the kids.

Not to be Missed on a Finland Holiday

A trip to Linnanmäki Amusement Park in Helsinki. A popular family destination for over 50 years, this fun theme park is an homage to Finnish culture. You’ll find rides from thrilling rollercoasters to gentle kids’ rides, as well as games to play in the arcade halls, entertaining outdoor performances and lots of places to sample some delicious traditional Finnish food. Don’t miss a ride on the old-style wooden rollercoaster and the dizzying heights of the Ferris Wheel!
