Istrian Riviera Holidays
Situated in the North of Croatia, the Istrian Riviera is a gorgeous mixture of splendid natural beauty, stunning medieval towns and endless cobbled streets. One of the most popular Croatian destinations, this is a region that boasts vast green fields, Tuscan-style vineyards, charming ancient cities, secluded pebbled beaches, and all of that is being washed off by the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic. A truly beautiful place, the Istrian Riviera also benefits from the warm, mild Mediterranean climate, resulting in endless sunshine and long, hot summers. Plenty of charming towns are dotted around the area so you are spoilt for choice of where exactly to go.
Pula is the main town here, the setting for one of the most famous sights in the whole country – the Roman amphitheatre, dating back to the 1st century AD. Pula’s attractions also include the Temple of Augustus, the Forum, the town’s cathedral, and the Hercules Gate which is the oldest standing Roman monument here. The abundance of Roman heritage in the area should not surprise you as the Istrian Riviera is on a very close proximity to Italy – they share the same climate, the same sea, and even have some common history together. Truth is, Italian is the second language in Istria so if you happen to be fluent in it, you will be just fine over here! Then there is Rovinj, which is truly picturesque – a lovely little town, with charming cafés scattered all over it and an absolutely gorgeous Old Town that invites you to get lost in its cobbled streets. The highly popular resort of Porec is another great option, offering its guests a wide range of restaurants and bars, as well as a World Heritage–listed basilica, and a mixture of Gothic, Romanesque and baroque buildings.
The Istrian Riviera is an ideal option for a summer vacation as it has the perfect combination of pleasant weather, gorgeous nature, intriguing historical heritage, and beautiful beaches. The Istrian Riviera is truly remarkable with its natural and architectural beauty, but this is not simply a place to admire (although doing just that definitely brings a lot of pleasure to the senses) – it also offers a lot of things to do. While here you should definitely explore the sandy beaches – Umag boasts a range of Blue Flag ones, internationally recognised for the quality and purity of the crystal water. Do not miss on the local cuisine either as it includes some delicious seafood, prosciutto, local olive oil and truffles. Visiting a winery is also a must as there is a pretty impressive selection of wineries all over the peninsula.
Of course, do not even think of missing on those archaeological sites mentioned earlier – apart from all the Roman ruins, there is a wealth of old churches and ancient monuments. The Euphrasian Basilica in Porec, the Golden Gate in Pula, the Old Romanesque Gate and the Abandoned Stone Quarries in Vrsar are just a few of the many sights that you should see here.
The Istrian Riviera is truly a gorgeous place that offers a range of marvellous things to see – add to that the absolutely delicious local cuisine and the mild Mediterranean climate and you’ve got yourself a winner!
