Scintillating Siena

Siena is up against pretty stiff competition when it comes to idyllic and culture-fuelled holidays in Tuscany, but the charming and picturesque city more than holds its own in the face of the likes of Florence and Pisa, and throughout your Siena holidays you’ll find yourself captivated by a combination of medieval buildings, stunning Sienese art and immense local pride and tradition.

Tuscany is blessed by immense culture and history, stunning artistic prowess and beautiful surrounding countryside, something that will be a common theme during your holidays to Siena. As well as being able to immerse yourself in this breath-taking city of Italy, you’ll also find yourself in convenient proximity to more of the region and country’s most famous destinations and sites.

Medieval Tradition and the Great Horse Race

There are countless sites to tick off during your holidays in Siena, from stunning medieval architectural feats and engaging museums, to superb dining and traditional festivities. The best way to immerse yourself in the identity of Siena, however, is to simply meander around the historical and attractive city streets, randomly encountering piazzas, churches and palaces as you stroll. The focal point of the city is the Piazza del Campo, the huge square that characterises the grandeur of Siena. Absorb its splendour from the top of the Torre del Mangia – the tower that populates the square. This is also the site of the Palio horse race, arguably the most famous attraction in Siena, held twice a year and displaying the loyalty and passion of the Sienese.

Keep an eye out for the immense Palazzo Pubblico, the city hall of Siena, over 800 years old and clad with stunning frescoes by Sienese artists. The city’s Duomo is another magnificent sight, as is the adjoining Baptistery, while the Pinacoteca is full of fantastic examples of Sienese paintings from the city’s medieval past. If you fancy absorbing some more of Tuscany’s beautiful destinations, make a trip to Pisa or Florence where you can absorb even more of Italy’s immense history and culture.
